Exposure to sweat, dirt and constant use will impact your waterproof jacket. So to keep it performing at its best, it’s important you clean and care for it regularly.
Kathmandu Product Expert Daan Dijkstra explains the best way to wash your waterproof jacket.
Before you wash your waterproof jacket
Check the care label first, and follow any instructions from the manufacturer.
Remove any big, obvious stains with a damp cloth.
Secure toggles, zips, pockets, and cuffs.
Use a specialised wash like Grangers Performance Wash.
Set the washing machine to 86 degrees Celsius Fahrenheit, and select your standard washing program.
Restore the durable water-repellency (DWR)
- If you've noticed your jacket isn't as waterproof as it used to be, you’ll need to restore the water-repellent treatment before your jacket dries.
- Depending on the advice on your care label, your garment can either air dry or tumble dry. Follow the instructions for the best results.
Things to avoid:
- Fabric softener. To minimise damage, stick to a specialised detergent for the best results.
- The dry cleaner. The solvents they use in the dry cleaning process can damage your jacket.
